Fermentation (gut)

Gut fermentation is the process by which bacteria break down dietary fibre your own enzymes cannot digest. Through fermentation bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids - including butyrate - that nourish the gut lining, regulate appetite, reduce inflammation, and support immune function. This is why fibre-rich diets protect against IBS, constipation, and chronic gut inflammation: they fuel beneficial bacterial activity.
