FODMAP

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols - a group of short-chain carbohydrates poorly absorbed in the small intestine. In people with IBS or gut sensitivity FODMAPs ferment rapidly and draw water into the gut causing severe bloating, gas, cramping, and alternating diarrhea or constipation. A low-FODMAP diet is one of the most evidence-based dietary interventions for IBS though long-term restriction can reduce microbiome diversity.
