Prebiotics are non-digestible food components - primarily dietary fibres and plant polyphenols - that selectively feed and stimulate beneficial bacteria in the gut. Unlike probiotics which add bacteria prebiotics nourish the bacteria already present. Common sources include garlic, onions, oats, bananas, and chicory root. Prebiotics and probiotics work synergistically: together they form a synbiotic ensuring probiotic bacteria have the fuel they need to colonise effectively.
