Quorum sensing

Quorum sensing is the chemical language bacteria use to communicate and coordinate behaviour. When bacterial populations reach a critical density they release and detect signalling molecules - effectively counting their own numbers. Once quorum is reached they synchronise group behaviours: forming protective biofilms, producing toxins, or switching on virulence genes. Maintaining microbiome diversity is one of the body's natural defences against pathogen coordination.
