Stress and gut health

Chronic psychological stress is one of the most powerful disruptors of gut health. Stress hormones - particularly cortisol - alter gut motility, increase intestinal permeability, reduce microbial diversity, and shift the microbiome towards pro-inflammatory bacterial communities. This creates a vicious cycle: a disrupted gut microbiome further elevates stress and anxiety via the gut-brain axis. IBS flares are frequently triggered by stress events.
