Tight junctions

Tight junctions are the molecular seals between adjacent intestinal cells - protein complexes forming a selective barrier that controls what passes from the gut into the bloodstream. When dysbiosis occurs bacteria can produce substances that loosen these junctions increasing intestinal permeability and triggering systemic inflammation. Specific probiotic strains including Lactobacillus plantarum have clinical evidence for directly strengthening tight junction proteins and restoring gut barrier integrity.
